In Africa, they adapt slowly to their new rural life. Unable to come to grips with the events in Europe, reeling from and their new social status of being nobodies in the middle of nowhere, they struggle as social nomads, stuck between their privileged position as white overlords of the native Blacks, and their fallen, uncertain status as guests without rights. Nirgendwo in Afrika: Nach dem autobiografischen Roman von Stefanie Zweig entstandenes Afrika-Epos über eine deutsche Familie, die sich 1938 in einer fremden Welt zurecht finden muss. The wider story here is about problems arising from adaptation to new circumstances. The family struggles to find their identity, but the film has none of its own identity of which it can speak. All die Lyrik, Melancholie, Schönheit und angenehme Schwere des beeindruckenden Films wird in diesem Moment auf den Punkt gebracht.

It's a hard-scrabble farm in a dry region, and the father, who used to be a lawyer, is paid a pittance to be the manager. The resolution at the end of the film may surprise some viewers and trouble others. While the film looked really nice especially on the big screen , the story itself was not all that satisfying. The plot is captivating and the acting superb. Which leads one to ask: Is it possible to have a moral, socialized populace without racism, or, at least, ethnocentrism? Regina, so young when she left Europe, therefore hasn't tasted anti-Semitism until her parents send her into town to a boarding school. Although this movie also shows the beauty of Africa it depicts Kenia in a realistic way.

There is much history in this story. The direction especially lacks any creativity. The final scene shows Walter, Regina, and Jettel travelling on an African train. The film won the as well as five German Film Prizes , including of 2001. All the actors are superb, with Juliane Kohler as Jettel proving a particular standout.

Jettel makes the mistake of treating him like a servant when he sees himself as a professional. The director should have taken one or two of the themes she has here and delved into them much more thoroughly. This film is a breath of fresh air in a media that is not particularly known for its freshness. And the two Reginas Lea Kurka and Karoline Eckertz are very adorable. Walter decides to join the and wants Jettel to go to with him, but she refuses and stays to run the farm with Owuor. When you have a story as powerful as this it's almost impossible to strike no emotional tone.

. Little Regina she's played by two actresses, one for her pre-teen years, the other for the adolescent girl: both are marvelous approaches the unfamiliar African world of tribes, children who have different games and customs and the host of wild beasts with the open, wide and accepting tolerance of children who haven't learned to discriminate, to hate. In 2002, it won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, and it won much critical acclaim. This is an important part of history, and we need to keep the memory alive to avoid repeating it. Ganz anders Jettel, die Walter Vorwürfe macht und sich gegen Afrika sperrt. Link's style permits the narrative to flow as it might in memory, and although there are dramatic high points such as a fire and a plague of locusts , they are not interruptions but part of the rhythm of African life, and are joined by the sacrifice of a lamb for rain and an all-night ritual ceremony that the young girl will never forget. I saw this film twice, once on Saturday and once on the following Tuesday.

It is merely a foreign film that extracts many elements from movies that are actually relevant, and then throws them together in one horrible, stinking mess. I saw it the day before it stopped showing at cinemas, and was so thankful I hadn't missed it. The only German contact that Jettel has is through a friend of Walter's named Süsskind, an ex-German who has lived in Africa for years. Jettel sleeps with a German-speaking British soldier to secure work and a home on a farm for the family, and Regina and Walter both find out. Plus, you never really got to know the Africans themselves--they were more like a part of the scenery than real people. Cooks don't dig in the ground. Each member of the Redlich family has a separate arc: The mother grows to like Africa as the father likes it less, and their daughter loves it always.
